Well, hello, everybody, and welcome to a very special edition of the ABA Coffee In The Park. My name is Cam Milliken, and I am here with my co-host extraordinaire, the amazing Jennifer Herrick, the Executive Director of the Acheson Business Association. Hello, Jennifer. Hello, Cam. It is a special day. It's a very special day. You know what, Cam, I'm sitting here and a little bit of disbelief. Yeah, me too. We're kind of in awe today. We are. Because this is... This is our one year anniversary slash birthday of the podcast. Can you believe it? We have been doing this for one whole year. Well, the fact that we're still sitting across from each other doing this podcast, number one is amazing. I know. There are marriages that don't make it this long. I know. And this is incredible. And here you and I are. And it's been... And we're still friends. We are. We are. Right? And what a year. What a year. Let's be honest. When we started this, we didn't think it would go very far. We really didn't. No. No. I mean, I guess we didn't really... I don't know why, but we just didn't. And you always tell the story of how we started this podcast. Yes. So... Do you want me to tell... Well, you tell it better than I do. So one day... So for those that don't know, Cam's office and my office are kind of across the hall from each other. 30 feet across the front But this goes back to the days where we were in Bow Valley Credit Union, in the bank. That's right. That was the original office. You were around the corner. I was around the corner. That's right. You were in the back there. That's right. I miss that office. Bow Valley, can I have that back? Just kidding. No, they're not giving it back. Okay, they're not giving it back. I missed my office too, because my office was like the size of the oval office in the White House. And now I'm in like... Well, I'm not complaining, but nonetheless. We digress. We digress, yes. So I walked around the corner to your office, and you had the microphone that we're currently using. Yeah, our blue mic. On your desk, and I said, what are you... what's that? And you told me, oh, we're starting a podcast. And I said, you're starting a podcast? That's great. And you looked at me and said, no, we are starting a podcast. I subscripted you or whatever that is. And I called you an idiot. You did. She did. She called me an idiot. I did call him an idiot. But it didn't phase me. And I walked out. And then over the next few months, another mic showed up. And so here we are. I remember, I know, and we talked about it, and we talked about what we wanted the podcast to look like and what we were going to call it and all that kind of stuff. And we just said we just wanted to be coffee and conversation. And I think this also stemmed out of the fact that you and I were meeting so many fascinating business people at the time that had amazing stories. They really did. They had great stories. And I thought, we got to tell these stories. And you like that idea. And so how do we do that? We start a podcast. We start a podcast. And then 5 million people have started a podcast. There's only like five. There's like what? 500 million podcasts in the world. And so we're just a drop in the podcast bucket. But we had no listeners, zero listeners. Well, that's not totally true. Your mom, she's so faithful. I love your mom. She was like, I think, our first listener. Our families were our first listeners. Yeah, our families were. My cousins, they listened every now and then. And so yeah, I remember saying to you, if we get 250 listeners, I'd be happy. That was a bit... I know. That was a number that was a little audacious. I know. I didn't even think we'd get there. No, it seemed like there's no way 250 people are gonna listen to this. And I thought maybe we do this for five episodes, and that would be it. That's it. I know. You were ready. I think you were just appeasing me to get it off the table, and hoping you'd move on to something else. Well, Cam had another idea, and it didn't quite work out, so let's see where that goes. But anyway, so we passed 250 pretty quick. It was very quick. And then remember when we got to 500 listeners? Hannah baked us a cake. Yes. We have pictures of us with our 500 listener cake. So for those listening, Hannah is, I'll call her our amazing Executive Producer. She is kind of, yeah. She takes care of a lot of stuff. She posts our podcast. She transcribes everything. She's amazing. Yeah, she really is. And she gets it out there and all that kind of stuff. So it's all really great. So yeah, and so then we wondered where are we going to do this podcast? And we were in the coffee shop for a lot of meetings. And again, we thought to put people at ease, just call it Coffee and Conversation. Yeah, right on. Because so many of our guests, Cam, had never ever been on a podcast before. No, never. And we didn't want to do it in a studio, per se. No, we wanted to keep it really organic and grassroots. Yeah, and so we do it here in the Wall Coffee Roasters, and we do it in the heart of beautiful downtown Acheson. And that's where we are today doing this show. And it's great. We are in a corner of the coffee shop. We're sitting, actually, I'm sitting on some church pews at a great table. And this is wonderful. This is a great spot to do it. It absolutely is. And I remember we were sitting there thinking, oh boy, who's going to come on this podcast? Yeah. How are we going to get guests? I didn't know who would yet. Like, I didn't know if we'd get anybody, actually, because we were nobodies. And as of today, yes, we have dropped over 55 episodes. We have not missed a single week of podcast guests. No, we haven't. No, that's right. That's Phenomenal! So we've had more than 55 guests, but we've done some specials where it's just been you and I. So in this course of this past year, we've had probably about, what, 52, 53 guests on the podcast. Unbelievable. From all walks of life. All walks of life. From everywhere. Tell me, who's some of your favorites? You know what? I had to go back, and it's so funny, a year goes by and you think, oh my gosh. I know. You look back and you think, we've actually had all of these people on the podcast. I know. I was looking at, I was putting together a bit of a slideshow yesterday because we're doing a little thing here. We're doing a little party here at the Wall Coffee Roasters. And invited a bunch of our past guests. And I actually got a little emotional going through it. Looking at all these guests. I know. The people we've had. Like, unbelievable. And Cam, I would say the people that we now call friends. Yes, I agree with that, Jennifer. Like, they have it. They weren't just guests on our podcast. If they started out that way, now they've kind of become friends of ours. And we just continued to grow and grow and have more listeners and more listeners. And then we're tracking that our listeners aren't just here in Edmonton or in Alberta or in Canada. This is the part that blows my mind! They're around the world. They are around the world. Cam, we are in 233 cities. Yes. In every continent except except Antarctica. The penguins aren't listening. They don't know if they have that technology. So if anybody there knows a penguin, that would get them to listen. Or if you know anybody in Antarctica who's like a penguin farmer or rancher, and you got nothing to do, because I understand the winters are like cold and dingy and like late, there's no light. So you want to listen to a great podcast, just let them know about our podcast. But yeah, we're on every continent. Isn't that amazing? It amazes me, because I mean, I've had the privilege of being to a few continents, but I just can't believe that somebody in every continent is listening to ABA Coffee In The Park. No, I can't either. It's unbelievable. I know. And so this is pretty incredible. And over 9,000 listeners. Yes. And so the thing is, is like we just, we're like kind of nobodies. Well, we are nobodies. Yeah, we are. We're not like stars or anything like that. We don't have limos or like private jets or anything. I want my tour bus, but that's not happening. It's going to be like your mom's motor home, like with our pictures plastered all over it. As we like go on tour of Alberta. It's like, it's like that's what we need to do. Like, I mean, you know, like we're going to go on the road, folks. We're going to do the road show. Mom, I'm coming to get the motor home. We're going to get Don and Jan to plaster our pictures on the side of that at Mprint. And then it's going to be like, coming to a town near you, you know, like Friday night at the curling rink or something like that. But hey, you know, that's how they all started out. That's that's how all the big people started out. You got to start somewhere. So maybe you'll see us on a road trip. I don't know a road show. I have no idea. But anyway, because every time I say things like that, Jennifer looks at me and that word idiot pops up. But look where we are today. So yeah, so yeah, it's been quite a thing. So every continent, 233 cities, and almost over 9,000 listeners. Yes, which is why we're having the party tonight to celebrate. That's right. And you know what we're having at our party? Our favorite. We're having Wing Snob Wings. Mike Chadi. Mike Chadi was one of our early guests. And Mike is somebody that you and I call a dear friend. Mike has become such a good friend, and he just does an amazing thing. He's always supportive of us, and he has Wing Snob, and they make the best wings I've ever had. Best chicken wings ever. 10 locations. That's right. Never frozen. Across Edmonton and region. That's right. Never frozen. Always fresh. And all, what, 30-some flavors. Okay, what's your favorite flavor? Well, I really like the Parmesan ones. I really like those, the Parm Wings. I was so excited when he got dill pickles. Yes, you love dill pickles. And they're pretty good. They are really good. I love them. And matter of fact, we did one of our last podcasts we did with Nadel Huoseh, in a Wing Snob. In Manning. That's right, in Manning, in Edmonton. That's right. And that was kind of cool. You and I ate, shared 30 wings. I'm not going to say who ate more of the wings. I'm just going to leave it at that. But it wasn't me. And we ate our wings. Then we did our podcast. Then Nadel, he wanted to order more wings. Well, how do you not when you're at Wingstown? I know. That's the truth, right? And we're having this, we thought this might be too big of a cake for Hannah to bake. Yeah. So our dear friends at Freson Brothers are going to be doing a cake. They made us a cake. Yes. You know what flavor it is? No. Because you weren't here. I wasn't here. So she asked me what flavor. I want to be surprised. Okay. I want to tell you, but it's my favorite flavor. Okay. And so we're getting a cake and we're getting wings. And it's going to be just, we're bringing some of our past guests together. We're going to show a bit of our slideshow, and we're just going to have fun celebrating and thank them for helping us make it one year. One year. And you know, when I think back, let's just think back for a minute, how all the guests we've had. We've had some pretty, well, they've all been incredible. We've had incredible guests. Our very first guest, you remember who our very first guest was? Jan Michener from Michener Allen Auctioneering. She was great. She was. She was a hoot because she was telling us about her food truck that she's starting. She's just an amazing lady. We had Michael Wall. We had Michael Wall from the Wall Coffee Roasters, where we record from every week. And Michael was one of our first guests, and he was great. Just a great story, a phenomenal story. You know, for me, I think what was so great is we had all three of the Lifetime Achievement Award winners on this podcast from the Acheson Business Association. So we had Wes Wall. Wes Wall. Yes. We had Darlene Whittaker. And Mike Myshak Senior. That's right. And that was a great podcast, Mike Myshak Senior, because his whole family came. It was great. And Mike is like what? 90 some years old. And he told his story. And the truth is, our podcasts, as you know, are about 30, 31 minutes long. Mike went for like an hour and a half. But that's okay. We let him. We let him because we wanted him to tell his whole story, and we edited it down, and it was incredible. And the best part about that was his whole family was sitting around the table here. Like his whole family. Like it was a lot of fun. And it was just... Remember when we originally talked about that one? We were going to do Mike Senior, his son, and Mike Junior, and have all three of them talk, but it was mostly Mike Senior. And he told a great story. It was an amazing story of his journey. Yeah, how they started business and everything like that way back in the day. So that was pretty cool. And then Darlene, what a story. What an incredible story. You know she's one of my favorite people. I know. You love Darlene. I've known Darlene for 40-some-odd years, and she has just such an amazing story of a woman in leadership who, a woman in leadership who, who against all odds said, I'm going to keep this business going and look at it today. Fantastic. I think the other piece for me, when you say women in leadership, you know that's near and dear to my heart, and we've had so many phenomenal women on this podcast. Yes, we have. And you know what, Jennifer, that I love working with you because you are such a proponent of women in leadership, and I love that. You know I am strong on that, and I believe in that. And we've been able to, we've been able to showcase that on our podcast. It's been incredible because there are some amazing women who are incredible leaders, business women, and in other walks and areas of life, who have done some incredible things. It's true, everyone from, you know, our Women in Leadership Award winners, Maron Green was on the podcast. Yeah, Maron Green, yeah, she's amazing. Amazing. We had Stephanie Rodenkirchen on the podcast. Yeah. From Lotus Group. We had some great women. Just the fact that you can say Rodenkirchen is like that's. Tamara Sanderson. Tamara, what a story, Tamara. An unbelievable story. Again, another woman who could have just, admist in the, you know, adversity was like, no, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna make it happen, and she did. Pretty incredible, pretty incredible. And then, when we were talking about our lifetime achievement awards, we had Wes Wall, the founder of Genics. Here where we are, this property is on the Genics property. And founder of the Acheson Business Association. That's right, one of the original founders of the Acheson Business Association, and has done incredible in business. Such a supporter. Such a supporter, one of my best friends, but is just a great guy, like amazing. And we've been able to have, and you know what? You know what about Wes? I'll let you in on a little secret. We're the only podcast he's ever done. He turns people down. I know he turns people down. He just does us. Like we're very, I think I feel very honored. Me too. Because there are some of our guests that have been in that situation. Yeah. We are the only podcast. I know. And it's not like they don't get asked. They do get asked. They do get asked to be on other podcasts. And they've said no, but they've been on ours. And I think that's why they become such good friends. I agree. Yeah, they really have. It's not you pushing the Honey Blueberry Latte? Oh, the Honey Blueberry Latte here at The Wall Coffee Roasters is without a doubt the best latte I've ever had. Whether it's cold or hot, on a hot day, you want the cold one. On a cold day, you want the hot one. It's unbelievable. Like, it's just, every time I come in here, all I think is honey. Think about what we've done. We've had a Thanksgiving show. Remember that? Where we tasted pumpkin pie. We rated pumpkin pie. We went to three stores. We did. Was it three? Three. Or four. Three stores. And we taste tested pumpkin pie. That was the best. We taste tested pumpkin pies. I loved it. We did a Christmas edition. Yep. Remember that? We talked about our favorite traditions at the holiday. That's right. We got a lot of feedback on our Christmas thing because we talked both your family, my family traditions. And I got a lot of feedback from my family on our family tradition. But anyways, that was a lot of fun. And I think the highly rated Pet Peeve show. The Pet Peeve, you know, I think we that was Pet Peeves 1. I think it's going to become an ongoing, Pet Peeves 2, Pet Peeves 3. Because everybody can relate. No. Yeah. And that we heard that. People said, that's my Pet Peeve 2. And they just don't talk about it. And we just decided to talk about it. And it was a lot of fun. It was like really great. Cam we interview a cat! That's right. A Cat. Felix won the podcast Guest Of The Year. At 2024. That's right. Felix, the shop cat, over there at Bushell Transport. And was Cheryl Glattacker. And that was a great interview with Felix the cat. I thought it was a great interview. Halfway during the interview, Felix decided to meow. And then he just decided to get up and walk around. He was done. That's right. We couldn't hold his attention. So luckily Cheryl was there because she was able to fill in for Felix. And then yeah, we gave him the award at the awards banquet. And that was awesome. I loved Felix. I know. He's gained a little weight. But anyway, he's like, sorry Felix, no offense. But you have Felix. You put on pounds. So but Cam, not only have we told some amazing stories of individuals, we've told some really emotional stories. Yes. The story of Tyler Pelke, who is such a good friend to you and I. Tyler is an amazing guy. What a story. And just one of the most positive guys I've ever met in the midst of tragedy in his life. And he's just taken his life and turned it around. I love Tyler. He is amazing. And we had the Stelters on. Mike and Lea Stelter. That's right. And for those of you who aren't familiar with Mike and Lea, of course, their son Ben, little Ben, had cancer, brain tumor cancer, and passed away. But he became huge in our city through the Edmonton Oilers and a good friend of Connor McDavid's and all of that. And they were so gracious to come on our podcast and tell their story. Yeah, their story. And that to me was just so very emotional for them to tell their story. And then we've not only had some really great emotional stories, but we've actually had live music on our podcast. Broddy Olson. Broddy Olson. The violinist from the Edmonton. Remember when he sat here? Played Amazing Grace. Played Amazing. He brought his violin, not a fiddle, a violin, and he played Amazing Grace. And man, I just had tears pouring down my cheek. And the whole coffee, remember? The whole coffee shop stopped. Everybody stopped and Broddy was playing Amazing Grace on his violin. It was unbelievable, really. It was incredible. So it's not just been, it's been such a variety of shows and people and stories. And we've had, like, like recently, we had, like, like Barrie, Barrie Stafford. Barrie Stafford, 28 years with the Edmonton Oilers. I know. What a guy. What a guy. Just incredible. Like, what an incredible story. And I mean, I know we could, we could name them all, because they really all were incredible stories. And some of them are just, they're all fantastic. And some of them, you remember just as, man, that really hit home. Like, that was amazing. Incredible. Do you know, I think the one that, that hit home for me the most, and you and I have become emotional on this podcast. Yeah. Yeah. I've shed a tear. I think it was when Trevor and Amanda Wilhauk talked about their 12 days of giving at Christmas. And just what they've done for the community. I know. And what a story. What a story. And, you know, there's more to that story than meets the eye, and that's not for us to talk about too much. That's for them to talk about. But they're giving at Christmas, and their willingness to give at Christmas, and just help their community, and help people in need, like it did. It brought tears to our eyes, and positive, positive people, like just, we want to make a difference. Plus, let's not forget, they have like some of the best beef jerky in the whole entire world. Oh, you can't go wrong with the Brickhouse Smokery Beef Jerky or Pepperoni. Brickhouse Smokery Beef Jerky is amazing. It's unbelievable. And they're part of, they're not far from Acheson here. They're just Spruce Grove. You know what, we've interviewed quite a few people from Spruce Grove. We have, the honey people. Richard and Amber Ozero. Those honey people, they're, that's- Cam couldn't stop talking about bees for a week. No, because I, what they told, I knew nothing about that, them bees. Like, how did I know any of that? Like, I just go to the store and get my honey. No more do I go to the store and get my honey. Now, I get my honey from Mrs. Herrick in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, whose neighbor is, I think, a bee rancher, and has bees, and brings the most- I'm just putting a plug in here. What's the name of the bee place? The honey- you're shaking your head at me. I just get it. I don't know. It's your mom's neighbor for crying out loud. I'm just saying that. But listen, I have a new respect for honey because I didn't know the bees did that, what they did. Like, it's incredible, like really unbelievable. And I could have gone on for that show for an hour because- We've done some amazing food episodes too. We did? We did. Oh, our dear friend, Amy Quon from the Lingnan. The Lingnan. Amy. Oh, Amy. I love Amy. And Amy Choy from Bing? That's right. But just go back to the Lingnan, the oldest Chinese restaurant in the city of Edmonton. And I was there on Saturday night. And it was amazing. Those green beans with pork are unbelievable. Anyway, we had them. Then we had Amy Choy from Bings. Bings in Spruce Grove. Bings is second for me. Yes. But it's good. Bings is very, very, very good. I love Bings. Because the beauty of Bings, you can't do this at the Lingnan, is that Bings, if you don't want Chinese, you can get a veal cutlet. And I just love that veal cutlet with that gravy and those mashed potatoes. I'm trying to lose weight. This is not good, but that's just unbelievable. We invented a drink. We did. I don't think it really went anywhere. The JC. I don't know why. I don't either, because I thought it was quite the JC. The Jennifer and Cam. That was a good drink. Well, it's still available. Summer's not over. No, I don't think you can, because they don't stock some of the ingredients that we put in the original JC. So I don't think you can anymore. Well, you know what? Call us up and we'll come over and make you a JC. We'll be a guest barista. Yeah, guest barista. That's right. We'll make you a, cocktail hour, and come on over and get a JC. And yeah, that's great. So yeah, we've had great food episodes. We've had great musical episodes. Obviously, we've had great story episodes. Just great stories. And I love the people that have told their... And you know, the other thing too is some of them have been pretty vulnerable and willing to share some really just deep parts of their life that maybe they hadn't talked about before, but they knew maybe this will help somebody. And so they were willing to listen. I think that's fantastic. I think it's amazing. Yeah. So yeah. And I mean, it's just the list goes on and on and on and on of wonderful people. And I was thinking the other day of Don from RE/MAX, who rode his bike across Canada. I don't know why I was thinking about... I think because I was driving and I saw a guy riding his bike. They were shaking their head. Well, he was having a little struggle. I thought, oh, is that what it was for Don? Like, that's not good. Like, he rode his bike right across Canada. Amazing. By himself. By himself. He didn't have a motorhome following him or anything. He was just by himself. And that was incredible. What a story. What a story. Amazing stories. So yeah, it's been quite a ride. Hasn't it, though? It really has. But I think the exciting part is. Yes. The ride isn't over. No, it's not. And you know what? Again, I'm just going to go back to it. So we've done a full year. Fifty-four people, fifty-four guests, almost ten thousand listeners. It's been amazing. And, you know, you come to a bit of a crossroads and you think, well, you know, do we keep going? Do we stop? What do we do? And people are wondering, are you guys going to keep going? Or have you had enough? And I'm pretty excited because we're not going to let the cat out of the bag today, but there's some pretty exciting news on the horizon. It's breaking news. Remember how we love to do breaking news? We loved breaking news, like when politicians would say they're going to run on our thing. They'd already told everybody, but we just made it breaking news on our podcast. There's going to be breaking news about the next iteration of the podcast. That's right. And folks, I'm going to tell you right now. It's going to be amazing. It's going to be amazing. I'm so excited. Oh, you're excited. Me too. Like, she's not calling me an idiot anymore, but maybe she will, but she's not. And this is, I'm, what, what? So here's the thing is you're going to have to stay tuned. Don't, yeah, stay tuned. Yeah, because we're going to let, soon, soon we're going to let the cat out of the bag. And you're going to love it. Yeah. I'm hoping you're going to love it. Well, no, I'm pretty sure. I think they are. I think people are going to love where we're going. I think it's going to be bigger. It's going to be bigger. Better. Better. More exciting. More exciting. It's going to get more exciting. No, it's going to be exciting all right. It's going to be incredible. And I guess for me, and I don't know about you, but I am excited because I think it's going to take us to new places and with new stories and new people, and it's just going to be great. It's still going to be stories. Yes. We're still telling the story of the every day person. The story behind the story, that's right. Because everybody has a story. That's how this started. And it's still going to be coffee and conversation and just, you know, sitting back and talking to people and their amazing stories. But just with a little refresh rebrand. Oh, a little. It's going to be huge. It's going to be huge. It's going to be amazing. It's going to be unbelievable. So keep following us. Keep following because it'll come out. Word will leak out. We're not telling a lot of people yet, but words leaking out and you might read it or see it in the news or in People Magazine or something. No, I'm just kidding. It's not going to be in People Magazine. The only thing that would ever be in People Magazine is Jennifer gets so mad at me. She kills me. And then it'll be like podcast host kills co-host. Done. But anyway, that's not going to happen. But anyway, I'm just saying it's going to be amazing. It's going to be amazing. It is. So again, keep listening. Thank you for listening. Thank you for listening. Yes, really. And you know what else I like just as we're closing out here? I like people tell me where they listen to us. I know. Like some of the strangest places. It is the strangest places. Some people tell us they listen to us when they're cutting their grass, on their riding mower. Some people tell us they listen to us in bed while they're going to sleep. I don't know about that. Maybe it puts them to sleep. But some people, some people, one person even told me when he goes to the bathroom, he like listens. Too much detail. That's right. That was too much information. I'm not going to say who that is. I won't say their name. But just I love, well, their drivings on trips and all kinds of stuff. So I think it's pretty cool. It is. It's pretty cool. It's amazing. It is. And so, yeah, boy, I'm just, I get goosebumps talking about it. It's pretty incredible. But anyway, thank you everybody again for listening. Thanks for making it a great year. What a year it's been. Yeah, what a year it's been. Thank you again to all our guests. Again, we couldn't do this without the guests. No, Jennifer and I could sit here and talk, but I think you'd tune out pretty quick if it was just always us. And Cam, everybody, everybody we have asked to come on the show has said yes, except for one, and that was a relative of yours. All right. So anyways, let's move on from that. It's a little bitter still. Well, I'm not bitter. I understand their reasoning. I get it. I totally get it. I just, I was just, you know, it's just anyway. Well, but can I just say something? We did a slideshow of all our guests. Yes, that we're showing tonight. We're showing it tonight. And you know what I noticed? Here's what I like. There's a couple things. There's a couple things. One, your hair. I know. Your hair, it's really changed. The changes over the year. That's very interesting in itself. Two, your shoes. You wear a lot of different kinds of shoes. I do. I like them. I'm just saying. Yeah. And for you, you wear a lot of white shirts. I wear a lot of white shirts. Your white runners. That's your trademark. Yeah, that's constant. And, Cam, I'm really proud of you. You've lost a lot of weight over the year. Thank you. I've tried. It's a struggle somedays. What, like when you're talking about all the food episodes, I just get so hungry. Those veal cutlets at Bing's are just like on my mind right now. And then the wings we're eating tonight. That's right. The wings. Tonight's a cheat night. I rode extra long on my bike this morning so that I could have wings tonight. Yeah, we have to have wings. 300 wings we're having. Can't wait! Yeah, it's gonna be amazing. Anyway, everybody, what a great year. Jennifer, most of all, thank you to you. And I mean that sincerely. It's been just a blast. It's been so much fun. It has. Yeah.
